• Richard Satchwell pleaded not guilty to the murder of his wife Tina, whose body was discovered buried beneath the stairwell of their Cork home in 2023.
• Glen Ward, the man named in the High Court as the leader of the so-called ‘Gucci Gang’ and referred to by gardaí as ‘Mr Flashy’, was jailed for five-and-a-half years.
• An Irish woman who had been living legally in California for 30 years was detained by US Immigration and Customs Enforcement after returning from a trip to Ireland to visit her sick father.
• The Taoiseach said he understands concerns about reports that the new ‘Housing Tsar’ will retain his Nama salary of €430,000.
• Hurler Kyle Hayes was deemed suitable for community service in lieu of three-months in jail after he breached the terms of a two-year suspended sentence.
• The Growing Up in Ireland survey found that levels of depression and anxiety have increased among respondents over the last five years.
• Rail commuters in the north Dublin towns of Balbriggan and Skerries complained that they pay nearly twice the Dublin zone pricing despite being located in County Dublin.
• Disgraced former bishop Brendan Comiskey died at the age of 89.

#POWER CUT: Large parts of Spain and Portugal were hit by a massive blackout, leaving millions of people without power.

#WAR IN UKRAINE: Russian President Vladimir Putin announced a surprise three-day ceasefire in Ukraine next week to coincide with Moscow’s World War II Victory Day commemorations.

#PALESTINE: Gaza’s civil defence agency said Israeli strikes killed at least 40 people across the territory.

#THE VATICAN: The conclave to elect a new Pope will begin on 7 May.

PARTING SHOT

Documentarian and journalist Louis Theroux is back on our screens – this time, with a new documentary set in the occupied West Bank.

His new film ‘The Settlers’ sees him return to the Palestinian territory to highlight the treatment of Palestinians, as well as settlers’ plans to occupy areas of the West Bank and Gaza.

It is the second time that Theroux has met with Israeli settlers in region for a film. In this video, he explains why he returned.
